The State of Washington is making some amazing quality wines for remarkable prices these days. The one I recommend for today is made by Columbia Crest, the 2009 Horse Heaven Hills (or H3) Merlot from the Columbia Valley. This wine is a medium to full bodied merlot that represents many of the best qualities of a new-world wine: polished, fruit forward with a big nose of blackberries and blueberries and a long, satisfying finish. Again, this is widely available and can be had for under $15 if you shop a bit.
