This month’s Worth a Splurge Wine is Far Niente’s 2009 Chardonnay. This is a California Chardonnay which is made in the French style that has a lengthy finish comparable to that of a great red wine. The winemaker’s tasting notes for the 2009 Chard describes the wine as having “aromas of Meyer lemon, honeysuckle and melon layered with toasted hazelnut and nutmeg.” There is a pleasant trace of but not an overwhelming amount of oak present. This chardonnay is smooth and balanced with bright acidity and a lengthy, gorgeous finish that mimics some of my favorite reds. Wine Spectator rated the 2009 Far Niente vintage a solid 92, and the wine is available in many fine wine stores for about $55, as well as in quality restaurants. If you feel like a white wine splurge, look no further!
